What to Wear for Family Photos
When people think about planning a photo session, they usually think about the location, the photographer and maybe the time of day. But one of the biggest pieces of the puzzle is what you wear.
Styling can completely change the way a final gallery feels.
You do not need to spend a fortune or buy an entirely new wardrobe, but choosing elevated pieces with good texture, flattering tones and quality materials can make a huge difference in your photos.
As an Orlando family photographer and Cocoa Beach photographer, I help clients think through these details because clothing is not separate from the final image. It becomes part of the overall look and feel.
Elevated does not have to mean expensive
This is probably the biggest thing I want clients to understand.
You do not need to walk into a store and spend hundreds of dollars on outfits for your session.
Borrow a dress from a friend. Rent something from Nuuly. Shop your own closet first. Look for pieces on sale. The goal is not to spend more. The goal is to choose better.
What I would not recommend is cutting corners on style just because it feels easier.
If you are already investing in professional photos, the clothing deserves some thought too.
A beautiful location and great light can only do so much if everyone shows up in pieces that feel overly casual, wrinkled, distracting or disconnected from each other.
Texture makes a huge difference
Texture photographs beautifully.
Think soft knits, linen, gauze, crochet, subtle embroidery, ribbed fabrics, flowing dresses, layered fabrics and pieces with movement.
Those details add depth to a photo in a way that a very flat fabric sometimes does not.
This is especially noticeable in beach sessions. A dress that moves in the wind or a soft textured shirt can make a Cocoa Beach family session feel much more natural and elevated.
Texture also helps keep outfits interesting without needing loud patterns.
Color and tone matter too
I usually recommend choosing colors that feel soft, natural and cohesive with the environment.
Cream, ivory, camel, taupe, muted green, soft blue, warm brown and other earthy tones photograph beautifully in many Orlando and Cocoa Beach locations.
You do not need everyone in the exact same color. In fact, I usually prefer that you do not.
Think coordinated, not matching.
The goal is for the colors to work together without competing for attention.

There are so many good options now for finding pieces with texture and beautiful tones.
Free People is one of my favorites for movement, texture and pieces that feel effortless in photos.
Anthropologie is great for dresses, layers and elevated pieces that still feel relaxed.
Zara often has simple, structured options in really good neutral tones.
Amazon can also be great if you know what you are looking for, especially when you need something quickly.
And Nuuly is such a great option if you want access to higher end pieces without buying something you may only wear once.

Pay attention to the finishing details
The clothing itself is important, but so are the little things.
Steam or iron everything before your session.
Check your shoes.
Make sure nails are either freshly painted or clean and bare rather than chipped.
Give yourself enough time for hair and makeup so you are not rushing out the door.
Those little details may not feel important while you are getting ready, but they absolutely show up in photos.
You should still feel like yourself
I never want anyone to feel like they are dressing up as someone else for their session.
The goal is not to completely change your style.
It is to elevate your normal style just enough that everything feels intentional.
You should still feel comfortable. You should still feel like yourself. But ideally, you should also feel a little more polished than you would on a regular day.
That confidence shows.
Styling is part of the experience
I used to offer a client closet, but it became difficult to maintain, and ultimately I found that helping clients choose pieces that actually fit their own style and body made more sense.
